Vergennes, VT - Award Winning Chef, Christian Kruse, takes the helm of the popular local eatery, Vergennes Laundry, on October 31st, 2017. Owners Didier and Julianne Murat transformed the original laundromat on 257 Main Street, in Vergennes, to a French inspired bakery in 2010. Seven years later, Didier and Julianne are moving on to new adventures, entrusting the beloved Laundry to the capable hands of Chef Christian Kruse who aims to bring high-quality, locally inspired dining to the Vergennes community.
"My culinary experience has taken me across the country and back,” said Chef Christian, “It's now time for a new endeavor, my dream, to open my own restaurant. When I heard the Laundry was up for sale, I knew it was the perfect fit!"
Chef Christian studied at the New England Culinary Institute, worked in Seattle and Salt Lake City, and for the last 13 years at Basin Harbor in Vergennes. With over 15 years in the industry, he is eager to take on this next challenge.
2016 was a monumental year for the 33-year-old chef. He received an invitation to cook at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City, won the “Chef of the Year” award from the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, and was the Culinary Cup Winner at the annual Culinary Classic event at the University of Vermont.
"I'm very excited to have another young chef in our community to join the ranks of the other young chefs who have made our little city a food destination, commented Alderman and Vergennes resident, Jeff Fritz. Vergennes Partnership President, Renny Perry agrees. “It is so wonderful to hear that renowned Chef Christian Kruse has acquired the Vergennes Laundry restaurant. This will solidify Vergennes’ reputation as a culinary center. We are so fortunate to have such great restaurants lead by gifted, young, food entrepreneurs,” Perry said.
Vergennes Laundry, long known for its pastries, coffee, and seasonal dinners using fresh, local ingredients will see some changes, though Chef Christian will keep a few local favorites on the menu. He
plans to introduce a “Chef’s Table” dining experience, a classic brunch, wine-paired dinners, and much more. "Vergennes Laundry will close its doors temporarily starting October 31st. After a few weeks of transition and some minor renovations, we’re planning a soft opening the week of November 27th, and then opening officially on December 6th. We'll keep the community up to date every step of the way." Chef Christian said. He and his family live in Vergennes and look forward to becoming more involved in the “Little City,” while showcasing and sharing his culinary talents for years to come.
